    Day One — Waimakariri River

The Waimakariri is a classic Canterbury braided river, with multiple channels weaving through vast gravel beds and river islands. The constantly shifting braids create a unique landscape that changes with the seasons and river flows.

As the journey continues, the wide open river gives way to the dramatic Waimakariri Gorge, where the river narrows between steep rocky walls. The contrast between the open braids and the confined gorge makes this section of the river particularly spectacular.

Feel the power of the river as you move between its channels, explore the braids and experience the scale of the gorge from the water.

    Day Two — Rakaia River

The Rakaia is another of Canterbury’s magnificent braided rivers, fed by the Southern Alps and spreading across a vast gravel riverbed as it makes its way towards the coast.

The river’s many channels, islands and gravel bars create an ever-changing playground to explore. Depending on the river conditions, the braids can range from wide, open channels to narrow, winding waterways.

The journey also takes in the spectacular Rakaia Gorge, where the river cuts through dramatic rock formations and the landscape closes in around you. The gorge provides an incredible contrast to the wide-open braided river and showcases the sheer power of the Rakaia.
